Bed 2

The next project was another bed for a little girl.  Its design loosely resembled some pictures found online, and included a canopy and a couple bent laminations.  Since this would be painted white, I chose to use alder.

It starts with a pile of lumber.

Parts are roughly laid out.

Pieces are laminated together to create legs. Eight legs were necessary.

Tapers were cut on the legs. I have since upgraded my tapering jig to be more safe.

Completed taper.

The arch for the headboard and footboard was designed, and then tested for bending.

Once arch was finalized, many laminates were sliced and thicknessed to about 3/16".

Laminates glued and clamped in the bending form.

The result.

A fluting detail was routed into the legs, the short rails mortised-and-tenoned, the bent laminations added.

Here it is after paint, assembled in its final resting place.

And with the curtains added.

Bed 1

The last piece I built for our friends' toddler room was the bed.  They chose this design from the same collection as the last two pieces.

Start with a large plywood box.

Add drawers (on both sides).

Build bed frame to fit plywood box.

Place plywood box in bed frame.  Add drawer fronts.

Paint and deliver.

Bookcase Complete

Keeping the blog up-to-date has proven more difficult than I expected.  Here are a couple completed pictures of the book case I built last year.
